The late show: Everyone's favorite TV jingle-writers rise above

I hadn't planned on coming to this show at the Bowery Ballroom until a couple of days ago when my new roommate Meredith offered me a free ticket (yes, an actual ticket! I'm actually guaranteed to get in!) Here We Go Magic, with Luke Temple's psychedelic, expansive, sound-effects laden electronic pop has apparently attracted more fans than I'd been aware of (and I can't say that I'm necessarily one of them, although he's certainly touring with a bevy of competent instrumentalists).

I was more interested (I admit) to see whether fellow Brooklynites Chairlift have anything going for them other than the ability to make Apple admen drool. The verdict? They do: and it's Caroline Polachek's voice. The sad, hysterical whooping on "Bruises" doesn't even come close to capturing what she can do, but the best example being the band's encore offering "Make Your Mind Up," showing that she has the velvet growl of Nico, but is also capable of packing enough emotion in her voice to be worthy of Kate Bush. She's a pretty damn good songwriter too -- in French as well as English. Good show, Caroline.

And Aaron Pfenning is just plain good to look at.

Their video for "Evident Utensil" has been nominated for a VMA award this year, but since some irritating copyright-obsessed person has decided to make it unembeddable, I'll post a link to it.
